The Agnikula Kshatriyas also known as Agnivanshis have a fascinating mythological origin story which says that they originated from the sacrificial firepits of learned Brahmins to protect them from evil forces. Their common surnames are Chauhan, Parmar, Parihar and Solanki. They are residents of large areas of North India, Central India and West India. They are a warrior community and hence lineage pride features considerably in their regular activities. They are a tall race with strong physiques and sharp features.

The Agnikula Kshatriyas are very particular about who they marry and matrimonial alliances outside their caste is frowned upon in their rural homelands but this mindset is changing gradually in the urban milieu. Matches for matrimony are arranged by the parents of the respective children in a formal ceremony between both parents coming together as equals. Even a hint of disrespect at this event is considered a grave offense.

The marriage ceremony is conducted with all the customs of the Agnikula Kshatriyas at the family fort. The groom rides on a horse or an elephant to the bride’s house and stops at the gate (pol). There is a torana placed on the top of the pol which the groom must touch while standing on top of his ride to prove his eligibility to the family of the bride. On successful completion of this task, the father of the bride places a fresh safa (headgear) on his prospective son in law’s head to signal his final acceptance of the match.

The bride arrives dressed in mustard yellow clothing for the pre-wedding ceremonies which include games and haldi events. These games are played to identify whether the groom or the bride will hold the upper hand in the matrimony. The other events are similar to that of a Hindu marriage ceremony and are conducted with great pomp and gaiety.
