The Adi Dravida is one of the oldest communities of South India and is a candidate for the oldest community in the Indian subcontinent. They comprise about 18% of the Tamil population and are spread across the state as well as parts of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. They use the surname Madiga commonly which signifies their ancestry. Most Adi Dravidas are a rural community and are involved in rural occupations like farming and allied activities. With the rapid urbanization happening in India, the Adi Dravidas are also migrating fast from the villages to the towns.
EV Ramaswami Naicker and MC Rajah were noted leaders of this community and played a great role in their deliverance.
A matrimonial alliance in this community commences with a formal offer being made by the groom's father. If satisfied, the bride’s family sends back a silver bowl filled with turmeric powder, supari and rice along with a nominal sum of money as cash to signal their acceptance. A formal engagement ceremony is conducted at the bride’s house which is visited by the groom and his family who shower the bride and her family with lavish gifts. The actual wedding ceremony resembles a lot to the North Indian Hindu wedding with the exception of a singular activity. All events in the Adi Dravida community are commenced only after a Ganesh Pooja to obtain divine blessings. All other events are the same with a Sangeet ceremony, a Haldi ceremony, Jaimala, pheres and vidaai.
